마옌 데파르트망(Department) 라발 출생. 가난한 함석공의 아들로 태어났다. 20세 때 지원병으로 육군에 입대하여 군악대에서 클라리넷 연주자로 근무, 4년 후 아버지의 죽음으로 의가사 제대하여 파리에 정주하였다. 파리 세관에 세관원으로 근무하면서 독학으로 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 이 무렵의 전기에는 분명하지 않은 점이 많은데, 선량한 일요화가로 알려져 르 두아니에(Le Douanier:세관원)란 애칭을 얻게 된 듯하다. 1885년 살롱 드 샹젤리제에 2점의 작품을 출품한 것을 시초로 1886년 이후는 앙데팡당전(展) for almost every year, and for three years from 1905, it continued to appear in Salon Doton. He seemed to have worked as a second-class secretary for 24 years until 1893, but after retirement, he devoted himself to painting by taking professors such as violin and painting as his living on the outskirts of Paris. His work was a unique intersection of facts and fantasies and was initially laughed at. However, from around 1891 on the subject of exotic emotions
